Project Background
Kibogora Hospital is a rural hospital located in southwest Rwanda about 5-6 hours drive from Kigali. It was established about 45 years ago, first as a dispensary run by missionary nurses until the early 1960's, when the first expatriate doctors arrived. By the end of the 1960's it was operating as a full hospital and by 1970 it had grown to 120 beds.
Kibogora now has 260 beds, and is the district referral hospital for ten outlying health centers. It also has an affiliated school providing nursing and scientific training, and the Kibogora complex provides the only hospital service in a district of approximately 250,000 persons.
Site and Project Scope
This is a busy hospital and, with needs growing all the time, space and services are at a premium. Existing buildings, as well as any proposed development, will be on existing hospital property and, with this in mind, the hospital has asked EMI to carry out a number of tasks.
1. First of all, EMI has been asked to carry out a full site survey so that the hospital can see clearly what they own.
2. Secondly, when the above has been completed, Kibogora have asked EMI to undertake a master 're-planning' exercise so that future construction and phasing can be undertaken, and the long term development of the hospital defined, in a logical, fundable and manageable way.
3. As part of this 'strategic re-planning' EMI will also carry out a number of building design exercises for both existing and required new buildings. We will focus on one or two of these buildings in terms of design, but will provide the hospital with guidelines for as many of the future planned buildings as we can.
